Even when we have successfully chosen the right two people to work together, their relationship is not static. As people interact perceptions of one another change, as often as 2 decisions each second. Although human behaviors are diverse a repeatable relationship trajectory is described here. This table suggest labels for the kinds of relationships (leftmost column), indicates the meaning of the label (center column) and identifies a key mediator or catalyst (rightmost column).

Relationships start with connect, when people discover one another through being able to access each other's attributes, and develops towards Co-evolution.

Unfortunately, not many people have the courage to plan, which severely inhibits the relationship's potential.

The term "tri-win" refers to 3 aspects of a person's work: here's the work I'm performing (proud of efficiency), here's the advances I'm making in performing that work (proud of innovation) and here is the meaning of that work (proud of relevance and significance).

Combust occurs when the relationship between two people are operating on all three levels. A forest fire can suck in oxygen from 20 miles away at a 100km an hour. So too with people. People who combust never lack for resources.

Management forces resources onto them. This enables them to co-evolve by change on all three levels at once because both are willing to be different tomorrow to what they are today.

So set up your teams based on personality style (per Starkermann), and recognize that the teams will evolve, or not. Don't go into denial when things are not going well. Spending some time reflecting together on the situation may be sufficient; otherwise Spreadthink will set in at which time the team should be disbanded. Of course it takes a lot of courage to disband a team who are supposed to be producing something next week. But if you let it go the cancer will spread.
