for Conversations with Nick Bontis
Man of Many Hats
- An Academic
With Feet Fully Planted in the Workplace
We are especially
fortunate to have Dr. Nick Bontis, Ph.D., as the August guest
moderator in the STAR SERIES. He has just returned from his honeymoon
and must be facing multiple backlogs as:
- Director, Institute for Intellectual Capital Research,
a strategic management firm and research thinktank that specializes
in conducting knowledge management audits, intellectual capital
valuations and organizational learning assessments.
- Assistant Professor,
DeGroote
School of Business, McMaster University, Ontario, Canada,
and was recently rated one of McMaster's most popular professors
by Maclean's magazine.
- Associate Editor,
Journal
of Intellectual Capital, the leading academic publication
in the field.
- Chief Knowledge
Officer, Knexa.com,
the world's first knowledge exchange and auction.
- Program Director,
World
Congress on Intellectual Capital, January 16-18, 2002
Fortune magazine
recently recognized him as "one of the world's real intellectual
capital experts".
Dr.
Bontis completed
his doctoral education at the Ivey School of Business, University
of Western Ontario and was the first Ph.D. scholar in the world
to complete his dissertation on intellectual capital. His present
consulting work and research interests include diagnosing knowledge
stocks and flows in organizations and their impact on organizational
performance.
Professor Bontis
has won international acclaim for many of his academic research
papers, book chapters and business management cases. His most
recent publications appear in the Journal of Management Studies,
Knowledge and Process Management, Journal of Internet Research,
International Journal of Technology Management, European Management
Journal, International Journal of Management Reviews, Management
Decision, Business Quarterly, and Knowledge Inc.
He is currently
working on three new books in the areas of intellectual capital
and knowledge management. He has presented at hundreds of conferences,
corporate presentations, seminars and workshops in Canada, the
U.S., the U.K., the Caribbean, Europe, South America, Africa,
and Oceania. Dr. Bontis is also Academic Chairperson for the
Intellectual Capital Division of Knowledge Management Consortium
International (KMCI). He is on the Advisory Board of several
organizations including Internet start-ups BrassRing Systems.com
(a web-based hiring solutions provider), SmartShadow.com (a software
optimizer of corporate communications and learning) and a variety
of educational-based institutions currently designing knowledge
management programs.
Dr. Bontis brings
several years of related work experience with him. In addition
to his current academic and consulting pursuits, he worked in
human resources for the Ministry of Employment prior to working
as an accountant for KPMG. Before his return to academia, he
worked for several years at the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce
Securities Inc. in a variety of areas including Marketing, Securities
Analysis, Recruitment, Strategy and Software Development among
others.
Nick enjoyed many
years as a leading member of both the UWO Varsity Men's Soccer
(Canadian All-Star) and Track & Field (Canadian silver-medalist)
teams receiving national honors from both. He was also a Euphonium
player in the UWO Symphonic Band. In his spare time Nick enjoys
playing soccer, traveling abroad, watching movies, surfing the
Net, reducing his handicap in golf, and eating Bar-B-Q.
He dines from a
full plate whether at the dinner table or the conference table
and we expect a far-ranging discussion with the full membership
of AOK in the Knowledge Network Discussion Group.
