Next Generation Knowledge Management II
Transforming theory into practice

Featuring conversations with Steve Barth, David Snowden, Robert Buckman, David Gurteen, Patty Anklam, Carl Frappaol, Megan Santosus, Verna Allee, Nancy Dixon, Rob Lebow, Nick Milton and Jerry Ash

Table of Contents

Each chapter is a synthesis of conversations between and among the world's foremost KM thought leaders and practitioners with dozens of other knowledgework professionals and knowledge-seekers.

This indispensable new report separates KM myth (and hype) from the reality, detailing the thoughts of these leading KM gurus, and presenting their theories in a highly practical context.

Using case studies, offering positive and realistic perspectives, this unique report illustrates the capabilities that enterprises must develop if they are to be successful in acquiring and exploiting knowledge management.

We also include feedback from thousands of conversations with those people currently facing, and engaging with the challenge of KM, presenting their combined experience in a practical reference source for you and your organization.

Next Generation Knowledge Management II draws on the expertise of Jerry Ash, author, and founder and chief executive of the Association of Knowledgework (AOK), and the editorial team behind Ark Group's industry-leading Inside Knowledge magazine.

Preface

This special report is written in a conversational style because the Next Generation Knowledge Management (NGKM) series is based on email discussions hosted by the Association of Knowledgwork (AOK).

Because emails are casually written, messages have been edited for grammar, spelling and clarification, but rarely for content. Because email discussions are usually asynchronous, the messages have been synthesized to provide better flow.

Contributors often reference other authors and material. Care has been taken to obtain copyright permission where appropriate and extensive footnotes provide attribution and additional material to extend the learnings beyond this special report. Footnotes are substantive and amount to nearly eight percent of the total content.
Because the discussions occurred over more than a year, care has been given to updating the material to ensure that the information is current to the date of publication.

All 66 contributors are KM savvy, ranging from highly acclaimed management thought leaders to KM practitioners and students of the field. In addition to the chapter moderators, many former and future moderators have contributed their thoughts and opinions throughout the report. All the contributors have been given an opportunity to review this report for content and accuracy and their corrections and suggestions have been incorporated into the final document. As revised, the contributors stand by their original quotes.
